Salina Police have now released video from the Sunflower Bank ATM in which “skimmer” devices were attached last Thursday.
The video, taken by the ATM’s surveillance camera, appears to shows the individual police believe is responsible for attaching the illegal devices to the ATM’s. The video was taken at 6:42 a.m. Thursday morning at the ATM at the Sunflower Bank location at 2070 S. Ohio. Police released still photos from this video earlier on Monday.
Police were contacted by Sunflower Bank officials on Thursday after it was discovered that ATM’s at two locations had been tampered with. Police were able to seize a skimming device from the ATM at the Sunflower branch at 2450 S. 9th, but the device from the S. Ohio location had been removed before police arrived.
Police say a chip inside the skimmer records bank account information, without the customer’s knowledge, once the card is slid through the skimmer and into the ATM. In addition to the skimmers, cameras are installed in the ATM’s. These cameras are used to capture the customer’s personal identification number (PIN) number when they use their card.
Police believe the two Salina cases are connected to a similar incident in Wichita, in which a skimmer device was discovered at a Sunflower Bank location there. According to Wichita Police, a skimmer was also discovered last Thursday at the Sunflower Bank located at 4101 E. Harry. Police in Wichita were able to remove that device before thieves were able to retrieve it.
Anyone that can identify the individual shown in the video, is asked contact the Salina Police Department at 785-826-7210 or Crime Stoppers at 785-825-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted by texting SATIPS to CRIMES (274637), or by visting www.pd.salina.org and following the Crime Stoppers link to submit a web tip.
