WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Wichita police say gang violence has
dropped dramatically in the city since the early 1990s, but that
doesn’t mean the problem is over.
Police documented about 2,900 gang members in Wichita last year
– about 1,717 of them active.
Lt. Todd Ojile told a crime victims’ conference Wednesday that
about 62 gangs or subsets exist, but some on them have only a few
members.
He says gangs were part of several neighborhoods in the early
1990, but only two parts of town are currently linked with a
specific gang.
The Wichita Eagle reports that drive-by shootings, which used to
be a primary form of retaliation or intimidation, have declined
from more than 300 a year in the early 1990s to 13 last year.
