TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A proposal in Kansas to restrict private health insurance coverage for abortions is still under consideration by the Legislature.
It’s become an item to trade in negotiations over obscure bills making regulatory changes as lawmakers try to wind up their annual session.
Three senators and three House members plan to resume discussions Wednesday on various insurance measures, including the proposed restrictions on abortion coverage.
Their haggling has benefited abortion opponents, who would otherwise have little or no chance of getting the proposal passed this year.
The proposal would prohibit insurance companies from automatically including coverage for abortions in their health plans, other than procedures necessary to save a pregnant woman’s life. Companies would have to offer abortion-only coverage in separate policies.
