SALINA – The number of syphilis cases has been on the rise in Saline County, according to a media release from the county health department.

Syphilis is a bacterial disease that is spread through sexual contact. In addition, other persons at risk include those who have paid for any type of sexual contact or have traded sex for other goods or services.

Syphilis can also be passed from infected mothers to their unborn babies.

Identification and treatment is of high importance. If syphilis goes untreated it can lead to numbness, blindness, dementia, or death in the long run. It can be treated with appropriate antibiotics.

You may have contracted syphilis and not show symptoms or your symptoms may look like other diseases. This is why syphilis is called ‘the great imitator’. Symptoms can include a painless or uncomfortable sore, and/or a rash that covers the body but does not itch.

Relationships with just one partner and/or use of protective measures to include latex condoms are great ways to prevent syphilis. However, if you think you may have been at risk of getting syphilis, seek medical attention promptly. You can call the Saline County Health Department at 785-826-6602 or see your doctor to be evaluated.
