Nov. 10, 2015 – Salina Public Library’s Genealogy Club will meet from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Nov. 19 for its last meeting of the year. Barbara Mulvihill, Information Services Librarian, will speak on finding and recording family stories and the library’s new StoryCatchers program. The meeting will be in the Prescott Room and is free and open to the public.
Mulvihill will discuss the National Day of Listening, which will occur on Nov. 27. Attendees will be provided with information on how to record their own family stories over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Mulvihill will also explain StoryCatchers, a nontraditional oral history program inspired by the national program StoryCorps. In 2016, the library will begin recording community members’ stories of Salina and Saline County. Typically, an interview, or more accurately a conversation between two people who know each other, will be recorded using digital audio equipment. With the permission of those being recorded, the library will keep copies of the recordings and publish them online, or use portions at community events. The person telling their story also will receive a copy of the recording on CD.
StoryCatchers is being conducted in partnership with Smoky Hill Museum and is partially funded by a grant from the Earl Bane Foundation.
For more information or if you or someone you know would be interested in participating in StoryCatchers, please contact Mulvihill at bmulvihill@salpublib.org, 785-825-4624 or visit the library at 301 W. Elm.
