The Story of Nicodemus Told June 2nd At Smoky Hill Museum

It is the fascinating story of a journey that began with slavery in
Kentucky and ended in Nicodemus, the only remaining all-Black settlement west of the Mississippi. Join Angela O. Bates as she details the slave experience, as told by those who endured it, and tells of the efforts to solicit them as settlers.

Learn about the 1877 migration to Kansas, the dust bowl years and the Great Depression as well as Nicodemus’ renewed hope through preservation efforts as a National Park. Angela is the executive director and a past president of the Nicodemus Historical
Society.

This free program is provided by the Kansas Humanities Council and is being offered by the Smoky Hill Museum, Thursday, June 2 from 5:30-6:30 pm.
