LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – A 69-year-old Kansas man has drawn a long prison sentence for molesting a 4-year-old girl at a rural Lawrence day center in 2009.

Richard Gonzalez was convicted in January of aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. On Thursday, Douglas County District Judge Sally Pokorny sentenced him to serve 25 years to life on each count. The sentences will run together, meaning Gonzalez would be 94 years old before he’s eligible for parole.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports the judge described the sentence as “a harsh punishment for a terrible crime.” Prosecutors said Gonzalez molested the girl during nap times over several weeks at a day care center operated by his daughter southwest of Lawrence.

Gonzalez lived on the property.
