Appeals court nominee Six questioned on constitutionality of new Kansas abortion law

Former Kansas Attorney General Steve Six has been fielding questions about abortion from a U.S. Senate committee weighing his nomination to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Six during Tuesday’s hearing about the new Kansas statute further restricting abortions after the 21st week of pregnancy.

Six, a Democrat, lost to Republican Derek Schmidt in last November’s attorney general’s race and left office in January. He told the committee he hasn’t read the new state law and says the issue hasn’t come up in his private law practice.

His comments came as the committee’s ranking Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, grilled him on abortion issues stemming from his tenure as attorney general.
