Salina Police continue to take reports from businesses receiving counterfeit $100 bills.

The latest business to report a phony $100 bill is Taco John’s in the Central Mall, 2259 S. 9th. It is believed the bogus bill passed sometime between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday. It was discovered at the business on Monday.

Since December 31st, there have been at least a half dozen reports of counterfeit money passed in Salina.

• Two counterfeit $100 bills were used by someone staying at the Airliner Motel, 781 N. Broadway, to pay for pizza deliveries on New Year’s Eve from Pizza Hut, 1200 S. Santa Fe.
• A counterfeit bill was again used by someone staying at the Airliner Motel, 781 N. Broadway, to pay for another pizza delivery from Pizza Hut, 1200 S. Santa Fe. The bogus bill was used sometime between January 2nd and January 4th.
• A counterfeit $100 bill was discovered on January 7th in the bank deposit of Courtyard by Marriott, 3024 Riffel Drive. It is not known when the bogus bill was passed.
• A counterfeit $100 bill was passed at Lone Star Convenience Store, 100 N. Broadway, on January 7th.
• Two counterfeit $100 bills were passed at Chili’s, 2255 S. 9th, on January 9th.

There were also at least seven reports of counterfeit cash that surfaced at Salina businesses throughout the month of December.

Police Captain Mike Sweeney encourages business owners to train employees on what to look for in the fake money. Sweeney said when in doubt do not accept the bill, get a description of the person or persons who passed the bill, or a vehicle description, and call police. He said it’s also a good idea to play close attention to the the security features on the bill, including the color changing features on both the background and in the serial numbers.

Sweeney said police as of Tuesday morning have not been able to determine if any of the cases are connected.
