Eva M. Peterson, 83, Minneapolis, died Saturday, January 30, 2016 at the Salina Regional Health Center. She was born June 9, 1932 in Ada to Everett H. and Grace (Meiller) Bradbury.
Beth Elaine (Saunders) Holcom, 85, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016. She had celebrated her last birthday Monday, January 25, with a huge card shower. Beth was born in 1931 to Otto and Eva (Loy) Saunders. Beth graduated from Barnard High School, Barnard.She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; two brothers, Dale and Pete, and her parents. LeRoy and Beth were married on December 1, 1951, in Wichita Falls, Texas. They were married for 62 years.
She is survived by her three daughters: Joyce (Ted) Williams of Salina; Sandy (Jim) Lumb of Manhattan; Sheree (Dave) Spratlen of Salina; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren: Andy and Gayle Williams, Gleason, Harper and Hampton; Joe Williams; Sam and Abby Williams, Mabel and Gus; Anne (Lumb) and Caleb Rubash, Ivan and Victor; Bonnie (Lumb) and Jason Linder; Becky Pauley, Dawson and Kaison; Michael Griffin; Stephanie Spratlen, Whitley and Trey; Slade Spratlen and Yvonne Baker, Trevor and Kelsey Cole, Emily, Brody and Brylee; a sister: Peggy Blanding of Silver Lake and a brother, Jerry Saunders, of Vinita, Oklahoma.
Beth graduated from Brown-Mackie Business College and retired after twenty-six years from Philips Lighting (formerly Westinghouse). Beth and LeRoy loved camping and fishing at Milford Lake where their fish fries always included frog legs and mountain oysters. The couple also loved to dance – oh, how they could jitterbug! After they both retired, they became snowbirds and traveled to Port Aransus, Texas, and Apache Junction, Arizona, each winter and made many lasting friendships. Beth loved to go to Las Vegas and she always won! She liked to watch sports; her favorite team was the K-State Wildcats! In earlier years she enjoyed painting, gardening and sewing and in her later years it was watching her favorite TV programs: Wheel of Fortune, Law & Order and especially Blue Bloods. With a quick smile that reached to her eyes, Beth made friends easily and never met a stranger!
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 4, also at Ryan Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary or your charity of choice.

Joan Louise Barhydt, 66, of Salina, went to be with her Lord and her “Daddy” on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016. Joan was born April 27, 1949, in Liberal to the Rev. Walter R. Brant and Euna Vaye (Ukena) Brant. The family lived in Parsons and Roeland Park, before moving to Salina (in 1958), when her father was appointed to Church of the Cross.
Joan attended school in Salina, graduating from Salina High School with the class of 1967. Joan attended Westmar College in Iowa for two years before transferring to Fort Hays State. Joan graduated in 1971 with a bachelor of science degree in psychology, and later received her master’s in education from Fort Hays.
It was at Fort Hays that she met Robert “Bob” Barhydt, and they were married Aug. 22, 1970, at her father’s church, Otterbein United Methodist Church in Topeka. After graduation, the family moved to Northern Michigan, where Bob served in the U.S. Air Force. Both son, Rob, and daughter, Amy, were born in Michigan. In 1975, the family moved to Dodge City, and then in 1977, they moved to Salina.
Joan taught briefly on the Air Force base, and taught special education one year in Kinsley. In Salina, Joan started the Learning Disabilities Program at Salina Central High School. Later, she began the same program at St. John’s Military School, serving there for one year before teaching the Learning Disabilities Program at Salina South Middle School. Joan retired from teaching in 2005.
After retiring from teaching, Joan worked as food supervisor and cook at Salina Child Care Center, where her grandson was a student. About this same time, she started her own catering business, Meals by Joan, catering many weddings and events at Salina Masonic Center.
Over the years, Joan was involved in many activities. She was a Girl Scout leader, trainer and the cook at many Girl Scout summer resident camps, where she went by the nickname, “Scamp.” She was a co-director, taking a group of Girl Scouts to visit scouting’s “motherhouse” in Switzerland.
The past years, Joan was involved with Kitchen 4 Hire, an incubator program for those wishing to start a food business. She was a member of KNEA and Salina NEA, the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the former Wheatland Civitan Club and the Civitan Club of Salina. She and Bob are members of Trinity United Methodist Church, where Joan was an active member of UMW and was the “go-to person” for the church kitchen.
Joan was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband, Bob, of the home; son, Rob, daughter, Amy Wolfmule, and the love of her life, grandson, Gavin Wolfmule, all of Salina. Her mother, of Topeka, survives along with sisters, Marilyn Spatz, of Overland Park, Elaine Schrader (LeRoy), of Lancaster, and Nita Zeit (David), of Fairview; brother, David Brant (Deba), of Topeka; and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and -nieces. Also surviving are two “special daughters,” Tanya Shiehzadeh, of Salina, and Tonya Vidales, of Wichita; and “special grandchildren,” Tristan, Hayley, Vin and Melayanna.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina, where the family will receive friends from 6-8, Wednesday evening. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 E. Neal, Salina. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina.
Memorials are suggested to Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, Salina Child Care Center or Trinity United Methodist Church.

Council Grove – Doris Elizabeth Horton, 89, of Americus, Kansas passed away January 29, 2016 at Diversicare of Council Grove.
Doris was born May 10, 1926 in Wilsey, KS to LeRoy H. Peterson and Edith Peterson (Richardson).
She attended Wilsey High School and graduated in 1944.
She married G. Dean Horton September 26, 1944 in Salina, and they made their home in the Diamond Springs area. They moved to the Americus area in 1947, where they farmed and ranched.
They had three children, Dean L., Connie Sue and Peggy Lee. They were married 61 years.
Doris was a homemaker all of her life. She loved to cook for her family and enjoyed working side by side with her husband on their family farm, Hidden Acres, where they grew crops and raised cattle. She was a member of two ladies clubs, Kahola Social Club where she served as secretary, treasurer, president and vice president at various times and also the Willing Helpers Social Club. Doris and Dean were members of the Peppy Pitch Club, where they enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends over cards. Doris enjoyed meeting yearly with her High School Classmates at their annual reunion and took pride that they still met 50+ years later annually.
In High School Doris worked at the Riegels Store in Wilsey and after her and Dean were married she worked part time at Colby’s Toggery Store in Council Grove for over 25 years. After Dean departed this world in 2006 Doris started volunteering at the Council Grove Senior Center where she enjoyed working with her daughter Peggy in the kitchen and visiting with friends. She also was able to travel with her friend Anna May Olson and family members on bus trips.
She is survived by her son, Dean L Horton and wife Marybeth of Americus, daughter Peggy Peters and husband Alan of Americus; grandchildren Matt Horton and wife Stacie of Americus, Ali Stufflebean and husband Curt of Galva, Joe Horton of Hutchinson, Melissa Lindburg and husband Brandon of Americus, and Amanda Palmer and husband Wade of Adair, OK; great-Grandchildren Dillon, Kara & Coy Horton, Cody Stufflebean, Logan Horton, Derek & Austin Korte and Wade R. Palmer. She is also survived by her brother and sisters-in-law, Gene & Peg Colby, Weslaco TX, Guy & Donna Horton, Emporia, and Bert Horton, Council Grove, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Dean, parents LeRoy & Edith, a brother Leon & wife Billy Peterson, an infant daughter, Connie Sue and several brother and sisters-in-law including, Carl & Wilma Bennett, Leo & Grace Horton, Don Horton, Leland & Carolyn Horton.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at Zeiner Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, from 6-8pm.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Wednesday, February 3rd, at Zeiner Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wilsey Cemetery.

Imogene Phyllis (Bird) Thayer passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Rooks County Health Center, Plainville, Kansas at the age of 86. She was born December 4, 1929 in Hill City, Kansas to the late Basil and Susan (Howell) Bird. She grew up in the Bogue/Stockton/Woodston area along with 6 brothers and sisters and graduated from Woodston High School in 1948. On April 1, 1953, she married Austin Thayer in Stockton, Kansas. They lived on various Air Force bases in Nebraska, Wyoming, and California before retiring to Kansas with their three children. Imogene was a homemaker but also delivered babies at the Harwood Home in Stockton and worked several years at Ernest Laundry & Dry Cleaning, Norton and the Solomon Valley Manor, Stockton. Her favorite job, however, was in being a grandmother to 9 children.
Imogene will be lovingly remembered by her sons Kevin Thayer and wife Susan, and Pat Thayer and wife Lorna, both of Stockton; her daughter Jenny Thayer-Wood and husband Tobias Wood, of Auburn, Kansas; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers James and wife Gail, Almena, Kansas, and Charles and wife Jackie, Arvada, Colorado; sisters Sharon Wente and husband Rod, Quinter, Kansas, and Ginger Hazlett and husband Ron, Burlington, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Austin, brother Eldon Bird, sister Normagene McIntyre, and grandson Lewis Thayer.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016, 11 a.m. at the Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, Stockton, Kansas. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Mary Jane (Boxberger) Combs, 78, of Andover, Minneapolis and former Russell, Kansas, resident, departed this life on January 27, 2016, at her home in Andover, Minnesota.
Mary was born in Ellsworth, Kansas on December 20, 1937, and was the daughter of William F. and Ida C. (Nuss) Boxberger. Mary lived her early life in Russell, Kansas and graduated from Russell High School with the class of 1955. She graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1959 with a degree in Business Administration and Economics. Mary was a lifelong learner, completing programs in marketing, banking, and finance along the way. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Ronald H. Combs on August 26, 1956, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. This union was blessed with two children, Michael Scott in 1960, and Patrick Lantz in 1963.
She moved to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1969 and after her children were in school, Mary embarked on an amazing career. Starting as a teacher, she rapidly transferred her skills to retail management, bank marketing and management, and eventually worked in financial marketing. She completed her career as Vice President of institutional sales and marketing for Federated Investors, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
She enjoyed friends, family and especially her grand children.
Surviving family include her husband Ronald of the home; son Patrick Combs and wife Ann-Marie and their two children John and Diana of Georgetown, Texas and her beloved sister Frances Mae Boxberger of Russell, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by her parents William F. and Ida C. Boxberger; son Michael Scott Combs, and her brother Paul W. Boxberger.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 2 PM on Friday, February 05, 2016, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell. Family will greet friends on Friday, February 5th and will begin at noon and end just before the 2 P.M. service time. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
