Child Drives SUV Into Downtown Business UPDATE

No charges have been filed and police are still investigating an incident in downtown Salina Saturday afternoon where a elementary school aged boy put an SUV into gear and the SUV wound up shattering a 20 ‘x 12’ window in the former Key Office Supply location at 214 S. Santa Fe.

Police say a relative, who was in another nearby business, gave the boy the key to the SUV so they could charge up a portable DVD player.

The child turned the key, started the GMC Envoy, and somehow put the vehicle in gear, jumped the curb and crossed 18 feet of sidewalk before striking the building and shattering the window.

The incident occurred about 12:50 p.m.

A damage estimate was not available.

The child was not hurt. The relative could face a possible charge of child endangerment.
