Barbara-Nelson-1456059015Barbara Muriel Nelson, 90, passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2016. She was born September 17, 1925, in Woodston, Kansas, to Harold and Inda (Merriman) Hoar.

After World War II Barbara left Woodston for New York City, to work as a teletype operator for TWA at LaGuardia Airport. On November 27, 1947, Barbara married Alvin A. Nelson of Barnard, Kansas, and moved to Salina, where she resided until her death. Barbara was a school teacher for over 33 years. She taught at schools in Rooks County and Headville, as well as 25 years with USD #305, teaching at Grace E. Stewart and Gleniffer Hill Elementary Schools, among others. Barbara graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University, earning her bachelor’s degree in education, and was a life-long supporter of KWU. She was a member of the University United Methodist Church and the UUMC Women, Rachel Circle, taught Sunday school, mission outreach volunteer, volunteer usher and office worker. She was a founding/charter member of Child Advocacy and Parenting Services (CAPS), then known as Child Abuse and Prevention Services, and continued as a board member for 10 years. Barbara was a Girl Scout leader, served as a reminiscence volunteer, and volunteered for Birthright. After her retirement from teaching in 1986, Barbara continued to tutor elementary school children, was a social service designee for a long-term care facility, and served as secretary for Salina South Lions Club. She was an active member of the KWU alumni association, followed KWU sports, art, and theater, and enjoyed watching WSU basketball.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Alvin A. Nelson, January 3, 1981. On June 17, 2000, she married Lloyd J. Schurr of Salina, who preceded her in death April 2, 2012. Barbara is survived by her son Allen (Jeanette) Nelson of Salina, daughter Marcia (Steve) Capell, two grandchildren Rebecca (Andy) Pettit, Timothy (Tarrah) Capell, her great-grandson Dalton Pettit, all of the Kansas City, Kansas area; her brother Gail (Ilabelle) Hoar of Stockton, Kansas; her sister Arlyne (LeRoy) Hutton of Agra, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 24th with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 25, at 1:30 pm at University United Methodist Church, Salina, Kansas. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery. Following burial family and friends may gather in the fellowship room at the University United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the University United Methodist Church or Child Advocacy and Parenting Services (CAPS) of Salina in care of Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio, Salina, Kansas 67401.

joh60219vet_ffffffBrady L. Johnston died Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, of cancer. He was 87 years old. He was living in the Shawnee Heartland assisted living facility, in Shawnee.

Brady grew up in Kansas and was a graduate of Pittsburg State College in Pittsburg, class of 1951.

Brady was a resident of Salina for over 50 years. During his long and diverse career, he taught school for 25 years, was a general agent for Banker’s Life of Nebraska, and a corrections officer at the Ellsworth Correctional facility. Of all of the positions he held during his life, he loved teaching most of all.

Brady was a World War II veteran and served with distinction in the elite U.S. Army Airborne in the Pacific theater.

Brady is survived by his wife, Lavon “Cindy” Johnston; three sons, Ernie Johnston, of Merrimack, N.H., John Johnston, of Prairie Village, and Dane Johnston, of Denver.

Brady leaves behind eight grandchildren: Seth Johnston, of Walsenburg, Colo., Ashley Johnston, of Denver, Joe Johnston, of Columbia, Mo., Elizabeth Douthit, of Odessa, Mo., Jenn Penrod, of Payson, Utah, Jay Johnston, of Nashua, N.H., Kayleen Tressler, of Kingsville, Texas, and Kevin Johnston, of Merrimack, N.H. He also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in Crown Point Cemetery, Culver.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Memorials may be made to Kansas City Hospice House in care of Ryan Mortuary.

kel60219Earl Keller, 85, of Salina, died Friday, February 19, 2016. He was born August 10, 1930 in Brookville to Everett and Clara (Breer) Keller.

He worked at Roberts, Federal Mogul and was a truck driver for thirty seven years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Michele Quintana; brothers, Jim and Duane; and grandparents.

He is survived by his wife Rhonda (Zachgo); sons Britt (Lisa) Keller and Brad Keller; daughter Monica (Brad) Johnson; son in law Dick Quintona, all of Salina; sisters, Jewel Hardesty of Colorado Springs, CO, and Gayle Giacullo of Arcanum, OH; five granddaughters, two grandsons; 1 step grandson; 1 step granddaughter and one great grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews and other family friends.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, at Ray Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. John Day as celebrant. A burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Brookville, KS.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, at Ryan Mortuary.

rod60218vet_ffffffTheresa Ann Rodenhuis, 60, of Salina, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016. She was born Oct. 23, 1955, in Salina daughter of the late Albert Robert and Mary Ellen (Hewitt) Korbe.

She graduated from Salina Central High in 1974 and attended Brown Mackie College. She served in the United State Navy from 1976-1979.

Survivors include her husband, Roy T. Rodenhuis and daughters, Anna Elizabeth Jasper and husband Jason, all of Omaha, Neb., Jacquelyn Rodriguez, of Fulton, Mo., and Angela Rodriguez, of Columbia, Mo.; granddaughter, Briauna Rodriguez; sisters, Martina Jones, Katherine Houston, Mary Brown and Georganna Korbe; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina, with celebrants Fr. Andrew Rockers and Fr. Gale Hammerschmidt. Inurnment will follow at Minneapolis Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Memorials may be made to Pope Paul VI Institute and are in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 North Eighth, Salina 67401.

Doris Lucille (Moreland) Frederick Peters, 96, of Salina, formerly of Emporia, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at Dignity Care Home of Salina. She was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Bushong to Everett Lafayette “Fate” and Elsie Houk Moreland, where she later graduated from high school.

She married Chester “Chet” D. Frederick on Jan. 7, 1938, in Emporia, and they were the devoted parents of three daughters, Mary, Karen and Linda.

After her husband’s untimely death at age 37, in September of 1954, she immediately enrolled at Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia, now Emporia State University, to obtain a 60 hour provisional teaching certificate. Doris then began the great passion of her working life, as an elementary school teacher at Walnut Elementary School, where she taught for 25 years.

While teaching full time, she continued her college work, earning a bachelor of science and a masters in education, and was also chosen a Master Teacher in the Emporia schools.

She was a member of the Emporia First United Methodist Church, Emporia Retired Teachers and a past president and life member of Alpha Delta Kappa.

In 1963, she married Clayton M. Peters, who preceded her in death in 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; her older sister, Marjorie Mounkes; older brother, Paul; and three younger brothers, Edward “Gene” Eugene, Sgt. Jay Bentley and S. Sgt. William W. Moreland, who both gave their lives at Omaha Beach during the World War II Normandy Invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Steve) Schafer, of McPherson, Linda (Bob) Murdock, of Hutchinson, and Mary (Van) Lett, of Salina; her only living brother, Larry W. Moreland, of Charleston, S.C.; five grandsons, Scott (Tonya) Schafer, of McPherson, Gregg (Paulette) Schafer, of McPherson, Chase (Elena) Murdock, of Edmond, Okla., Rick (Cindy) Lett, of Lawrence, and Mike (Bev) Lett, of Salina; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate her courageous life.

Memorials for either Walnut Elementary School or First United Methodist Church, both of Emporia, may be sent in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St., Salina 67401.

The family is especially grateful to the staff of Dignity Care Home of Salina for her care since July of 2011.

Diane-Werner-1455983610Diane B. Werner, 77, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 19, 2016, surrounded by family at McPherson Hospital. She had worked at the McPherson Family YMCA for 26 years as a fitness instructor and owned & operated Designs by Diane, a wheat weaving business.

Diane was born on January 1, 1939, in Des Moines, IA, the daughter of Wayne C. and Kathleen L. (Lane) Browning. She received a bachelor’s degree from McPherson College in 1961. On June 1, 1965, Diane was united in marriage to Garth L. Werner in McPherson, KS.

She was a member of McPherson Church of the Brethren and the National Association of Wheat Weavers. She also served on the YMCA Board of Directors and was a Cedars Volunteer.

Survivors include: her husband of 50 years, Garth Werner of the home; two daughters, Kathy Cherry (Patrick) of Richmond, TX and Sara Frankenbery (Todd) of Benton, KS; brother, Don Browning of Chandler, AZ; and four grandchildren, Ashley Frankenbery Long (Cole), Katie Frankenbery, Marisa Cherry, and Megan Cherry.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 5, 2016, at McPherson Church of the Brethren with Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at McPherson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to McPherson Church of the Brethren, McPherson Public Library, or McPherson Family YMCA in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
