Salina Police are investigating two cases in which women were scammed out of money.

Captain Chris Trocheck said a woman in her 30’s lost more than $7,000 while trying to secure a $5000 loan via the internet. Between February 23rd and February 26th, the woman had applied for a loan from a website she said was a five minute loan site. Before she contacted police, the woman had sent $6,118 to cover fees and other charges to four different addresses. Then, on Monday after contacting police, the woman received another call asking her to send another $1,000 and she did. Her total loss is $7,118.

Then on Tuesday afternoon, a Salina woman in her 70’s received a phone call from a man claiming to be her son who said he had been involved in a crash with a rental car and needed her to send him money. A short time later, the woman received another call, this time from a man claiming to be her son’s lawyer, who indicated that she needed to buy some iTune gift cards or her son would go to jail. The woman purchased four cards totaling $1,800 and scratched the back of the cards. She then sent information off of the cards in the mail to New York City. She was then called again and told to send another $1,800. She called police after her son, who lives in Las Vegas, called to see how she was doing, and learned he had not been in a wreck. Total loss in this case is $3,600.
