Federal Courts in Kansas to experiment with courtroom cameras

WICHITA, Kansas (AP) – Federal trial courts in Kansas and Missouri have been chosen to participate in a three-year experiment with cameras in the courtroom.

The pilot study is begins July 18 in 14 federal courts. Among them are the U.S. District Court of Kansas and U.S. Eastern District of Missouri.

Civil trials will be recorded with the approval of the presiding judge and all parties.

Clerk of Court Timothy O’Brien says the only federal courtroom in Kansas now wired for video recordings is the one for U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson in Topeka.

The recordings will be made by court personnel and will not be simulcast. They would be publicly available within a few hours on www.uscourts.gov.

Reporters will not be allowed to bring cameras into the courtroom.
