SALINA, Kan. — After a one week hiatus at the Salina Speedway the action returned on Friday night June 10 with five divisions of racing action at the Smoky Hill River Festival night at the speedway.
Salina Speedway veteran “Smokin” Joe Cleveland scorched the field to pick up a big win in the Belleville Motorsports Modified division. Brian Knoell took the lead on the onset of the race and held a nice advantage despite a plethora of cautions early. Cleveland finally found the momentum he needed and worked past Knoell for the lead and held on for the win, despite blowing a motor as he crossed the finish line. Knoell followed in second with Danny Morrison Jr., Mike Petersilie and Corey Lagroon rounding out the top 5. Seventh place finishing Kurt Johnston picked up the Xtreme Motorsports Hard Charger award after starting nineteenth. Troy Johnson, Scott Brown, and Cleveland picked up the heat race wins.
A wild finish was in store for the fans in the Xtreme Motorsports B-Modifieds feature as rookie Jesse Levin picked up his first ever feature win while outlasting current points leader Tyler Sutton. Bob Dauer held the lead and looked to sail away for the win until the motor expired late in the race. With the door and roof hanging off the car Levin pulled across the stripe first in a green, white, checkered shootout with Hard Charger Jerry Lambeth in second, Matt Picking in third, Fred Traskowsky fourth, and Seth Schroer fifth. Bob Dauer and Josh Rice picked up the heat wins.
An invasion from Iowa drivers ended with one of the travelers picking up the win in the Auto House Mod Lite division. De Soto, Iowa’s Josh May worked his way through the field and passed Earl Kinderknecht for the lead and win. Kinderknecht finished second with Brandon Gray third, Corbin Pickerill fourth, and Bud Lee fifth. May was also the Hard Charger after starting in twelvth place. Kinderknecht, Forsberg, and Danny Morrison Jr. were heat race winners.
The Blind Pig Sports Lounge Hobby Stocks showed a better car count and better racing as Mark Normandin came out on top in the feature event. Normandin got by Dennis Berry for the eventual win with Berry second, Aaron McBride third, Ron Rouse fourth, and points leader Mike Traskowsky fifth. McBride was the Hard Charger after starting ninth. Traskowsky and Shannon Johnson won the heat races.
Garret Hake picked up another feature win in the Accurate Electric Front Wheel Compact feature. He worked past Brandon Lobdell to finish first. Lobdell finished second, followed by Wayne Juenneman, Randy Rice, and Cody Johnson. Hake was also the Hard Charger, after starting seventh.
Racing continues next Friday night June 17 with the Barry Brittendall Memorial race. It will also be Father’s Day Night at the Races with all fathers admitted for half price along with a child’s admission. In action will be the Belleville Motorsports Modifieds, Coors Light Stock Cars, Auto House Mod Lites, Blind Pig Sports Lounge Hobby Stocks, and Accurate Electric Front Wheel Compacts.
