The Salina Liberty have released defensive back Dontr’a Matthews.
According to the CIF website, Matthews was released by the team Tuesday.
Liberty General Manager Francis Flax said Matthews release was a coach’s decision based on evaluations after Saturday’s 71-58 loss at Amarillo. “He felt he needed to do things differently than our coaches needed him to,” Flax said.
Matthews, a 6’3″, 185 lbs. University of Virginia at Lynchburg graduate, was instrumental in the Liberty’s March 12th win at Chicago, when he intercepted a pass in overtime and returned it for the game winning touchdown.
In 5 games with the Liberty, Matthews had 4 interceptions, 3 of them in an April 2nd loss at Sioux City. He had 27 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 forced fumble.
