Introducing Nick Pahls and Nick Neuburger, your BANK VI Heroes of the Week!
Pahls and Neuburger, both 4th Grade teachers at Coronado Elementary School, co-founded and started a weekly after school board game club for 4th and 5th Grade students at the school.
The group, which meets each Monday after school from January to May, was designed to bring the kids together in a safe after school environment and teach them new games. Each week, a theme is chosen for the games, though students may not completely understand that theme because they are having so much fun playing the games. Prize drawings are held each week for the students that participate.
When the club was started, there were about 20 students that took part in it. Currently, there are more than 50 students participating in the club, about 1/4 of all 4th and 5th Graders at the school.
Pahls has also donated much of his free time seeking out sponsors and donations for the group such as games, shirts and snacks, and even organized a trip for the group to a game store in McPherson to attend a board game day there.
Pahls says he was inspired to create the club based on his own fascination with board games. “I play a lot of board games and have a crazy collection of them,” he said.
Both men say they are pleased with the club’s growth and the support it has received from parents as well as the school’s principal.
According to one of their co-workers, Pahls and Neuburger are amazing teachers that go above and beyond in a time where many schools are feeling the limitation of their financial situations.
