smi60930Justine Mulhearn Smith, 87, of Salina, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2016. She was born April 11, 1929, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Michael and Mary Kelly.

In 1967, she moved to Salina, when her husband served in Vietnam. She lived at Schilling Air Force Base with her children as part of the “waiting wives” on base.

After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Elizabeth, N.J., she worked in the office of Bell Telephone Company. She worked in a variety of jobs while her husband served in the U.S. Army in three different wars/conflicts. She was a member of St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, Salina.

Justine lost her beloved husband, Edward Joseph, in 2000, just one month short of celebrating 50 years of marriage.

She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, great-grandmother and wonderful friend. She never met a stranger. She had a zest for life and loved to sing. She was very proud to be the wife of a U.S. Army veteran and of her Irish ancestry. Justine’s faith and trust in God was ever present, and she truly enjoyed spending time with her family. Her favorite saying was, “You can’t keep a good Irish woman down!”

Justine was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Ursula Lyman, Regina Dowling and Delores Lee.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Coogan, of Derby, and Jan (William) Shirk, of Salina; three sons, Christopher, of Wichita, Mark (Linda) Smith, of Salina, and Brian Smith, of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and “adopted” son, Joseph (Janice) Krause, of Bennington.

Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Ryan Mortuary, where a vigil and rosary will be at 6:30.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, 230 E. Cloud, Salina, with Father Kevin Weber officiating. Private interment will follow in McPherson City Cemetery, McPherson.
