A heat lamp over some chicks is blamed for a rural Saline County fire Wednesday afternoon.

Saline County Undersheriff Roger Soldan said Rural Fire District #5 was called to 9908 E. Riordan Road near Solomon after a heat lamp that had tipped over caused a small fire in a shed at about 4 p.m..

The property owner, Janis Bishop, was able to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived. A thermal imaging system was then used to make sure the fire was out.

Soldan said five chicks died in the fire and one survived.

Damage to the shed and its contents has been estimated at $600.
