Introducing Selvan Raman, your BANK VI Hero of the Week!
Selvan was nominated for the multiple ways he has given back to the Salina community since he moved here more than two and a half decades ago.
Shortly after graduating from Kansas Wesleyan University, Selvan was instrumental in helping the school transition into becoming a modernized computer networked institution, a process that took nearly two years, which included installing computer networking for all of the school’s dorm facilities.
He has also been an avid fundraiser for the Salina Family YMCA. The funds Selvan helps raise go towards the facility’s preschool and child care programs as well as membership fees for those with less income. Those funds also go towards YMCA’s summer program as well as maintenance of the facility.
Selvan also works in the IT (Information Technology) department at The Ashby House. He has played a large role in networking their computer systems at all of their facilities. He also helps raise funds there as well, which go directly into assisting the resident’s of the house into becoming more productive and valuable to society.
He works tirelessly on numerous boards, committees and programs, and as a Christian advocate with several churches, including First United Methodist Church and First Covenant Church.
Selvan has also worked to raise awareness of PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections), an ailment often brought on when strep throat triggers a misdirected immune response that results in inflammation on a child’s brain. This affliction can often affect the body’s entire immune system and children may begin to exhibit life changing symptoms such as OCD, anxiety, tics, personality changes, decline in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, restrictive eating, and more.
Selvan began raising awareness of PANDAS after his daughter developed the condition. Now he wants any parent whose child has the same issue to get results they need to get proper care.
“He is never complaining and is always seeking more to do,” Selvan’s nominator said, “he is amazing!”
