WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas health officials are cautioning parents not to leave children unattended in motor vehicles during the current heat wave.

Secretary of Social and Rehabilitation Services Rob Siedlecki issued a reminder Thursday that even a short trip into a store can lead to disaster as the temperature rises quickly in a closed vehicle.

Siedlecki’s reminder came one day after police in Wichita arrested a woman who left her 1-year-old son sleeping in a locked car while she shopped. The air temperature was nearly 100 degrees.

A passerby noticed the baby and called 911. Authorities were about to break into the car when the mother returned with two older children.

Police estimate the baby was in the car for 15 or 16 minutes. The baby was unhurt, but the mother could face criminal charges.
