Kansas Man Sentenced For Trying To Manufacture Date Rape Drug

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A northeast Kansas man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for trying to produce the so-called party drug GHB.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said Tuesday that a judge also ordered a $100,000 money judgment against the defendant, 35-year-old Shawnee resident Richard B. Smith III.

GHB is sometimes referred to as a date rape drug or “liquid ecstasy.”

Smith pleaded guilty earlier to three counts of possessing a chemical ingredient with intent to manufacture GHB, and one count of attempted possession.

He admitted obtaining four 30-gallon drums of the chemical in 2006 and 2007 with the intent of converting it to GHB.

Prosecutors said Smith obtained the substance from a chemical company by pretending to be an engineer for an elevator company where he worked as a salesman.
