Kansas Doctor Faces Hearing Over Abortion Referrals

JOHN HANNA, Associated Press

A Kansas doctor faces allegations that she did inadequate mental health examinations of young patients before referring them to the late Dr. George Tiller’s clinic for late-term abortions.

A disciplinary hearing was set to begin Monday in Topeka for Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus (NOO’-hows), of Nortonville.

She provided second opinions Tiller needed to terminate some pregnancies under a Kansas law restricting late-term. A complaint before the State Board of Healing Arts deals with her care of 11 patients aged 10 to 18 who obtained abortions from Tiller’s clinic from July to November 2003.

Her attorney, Robert Eye, said he’ll present evidence showing that Neuhaus was more thorough than many physicians are in examining patients’ mental health issues.

Abortion opponents hope her license will be revoked.
