Robert R. Bacon

Robert R. Bacon, 93, of Salina, died January 17, 2018.

He was born July 21, 1924, in Bennington, Kan., and graduated from McPherson, Kan., High School in 1942.

Enlisting in December of 1942, Robert served as a pilot with the Air Force in Europe from May 1, 1943, to April 20, 1945. He completed 33 missions during World War II while stationed in England and later became a life member of the 351st Bomb Group Association. Robert retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1984 as a major.

Robert married Margie Butler on July 3, 1945, and they moved to Salina from McPherson in 1948. In 2015, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Margie died in 2016.

He owned the Sid Bacon Dodge dealership in Salina for nearly 40 years.

He is survived by a daughter, Su Bacon of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter-in-law Cathy Bacon of Phoenix; and grandchildren Laura Bacon of Phoenix and Dan Bacon of San Diego and Dan’s wife, Liz Bacon; and a great-grandson, Theo Bacon.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sidney Paul Bacon, in 2013.

Robert was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Salina Country Club. He also enjoyed and won many rounds of miniature golf in friendly competition with grandchildren.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a life member of the Salina Masonic Lodge #60, Salina Scottish Rite Consistory, 32nd Degree KCCH and the ISIS Shrine Temple.

A private inurnment will be held in June at Roselawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Sid P. Bacon Memorial Research Scholarship at Arizona State University in Tempe. More information is on line at giving.asu.edu.
