State To Pay Loans For Energy Efficiency Group

The state says nearly 150 homeowners who had applied for energy efficiency loans will be able to get the loans.

This summer, the state transferred $22 million in federal stimulus money from the Efficiency Kansas program to the Kansas Commerce Department, which used it for commercial energy projects.

Efficiency Kansas offered low- to no-interest loans for energy-efficiency upgrades such as fixing leaky windows.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Commerce Department has returned $1.5 million of the money to Efficiency Kansas. The department says that should be enough to cover the loans that had not received final approval when the money was transferred.

Kansas Corporation Commission spokesman Jesse Borjon said the agency is still looking for private funding to keep the loan program operating.
