The 2018 Salina Poetry Series closes with poet Kathryn Nuernberger on Tuesday, April 24 beginning at 7 p.m. Nuernberger will read in the Salina Public Library’s Prescott Room. General admission is $5 and student admission is $3.50. A reception will follow the reading at SPARK Artist Resource Exchange, 146 S. Santa Fe.
Nuernberger is the author of the essay collection “Brief Interviews with the Romantic Past,” (Ohio State University Press, 2017) as well as two poetry collections, “The End of Pink” (BOA, 2016) and “Rag & Bone” (Elixir, 2011). A recipient of fellowships from the NEA, Bakken Museum of Electricity in Life, and American Antiquarian Society, she is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Central Missouri, where she also serves as the director of Pleiades Press. Recent essays appear in or are forthcoming from Brevity, Cincinnati Review, Copper Nickel, Paris Review, The Journal and Tupelo Quarterly.
Mickie Lacy, of Salina, will introduce Kathryn Nuernberger. Lacy is currently working on her manuscript Lifeoetry© Pieces of Reality Vol. 1, which consists of short entries based on her empathic response to people she meets. She considers herself a new writer though she has been a business owner and lyricist for many years.
Nuernberger will also teach a free poetry workshop, “Make It Weirder: Revision Strategies for Publication” at the McKenzie Center at 308 W. Elm St. on April 24, 2-4 p.m. Writers are invited to join the poet too, “Make it new, make it fresh, cut the clichés – this is classic and helpful advice for writers who want to publish.” Registration is required for the workshop and can be completed at the library or the library’s online calendar.
The Spring Poetry Series is sponsored by Salina Public Library and Salina Arts and Humanities Council. The series celebrates National Poetry Month with a poet performance every Tuesday in April.
