Project Salina 2018

May is the time when businesses and organizations encourage their employees to participate in Project Salina by collecting food for five local agencies to help the hungry. The agencies are Ashby House, Salvation Army, Salina Rescue Mission, DVACK and the Salina Emergency Aid/ Food Bank.

Daren Nay, Project Salina President spoke with The Salina Post and shared some of the history of Project Salina.”It was started in 1990 by Jack Parr and Jane Kramer. It was created because the need for food goes up during the summer months. Kids are out of school and there is a greater need in the summer months. The goal is to collect food through the month of May and getting the food to the agencies by mid-June.”

The first year 23 organizations participated and approximately 56,465 food items were collected. Last year 209 organizations participated in Project Salina and 245,199 food items were collected.

Nay said,” I just wanted to emphasize that we are a community that cares about the subject, people are hungry and there truly is a need for these kinds of services, for the people that are struggling.”
