Claeys Secures Use-of-Force Simulator for Highway Patrol Academy

Rep. J.R. Claeys (R-Salina) inserted funding for an advanced training simulator in the state budget signed into law earlier this month. The virtual reality simulator will be installed at the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy in Salina to train cadets on appropriate use of force in a variety of simulated scenarios.
“We are blessed with a well-trained and equipped Highway Patrol in the state of Kansas,” said Claeys. “This simulator will help keep pace with advancements in training and in appropriate responses to situations encountered in the field.”
VirTra, a company specializing in judgmental use of force and de-escalation training simulators, provided pricing estimates for a V-300 model simulator during the appropriations process.
“A 300 degree simulator provides the kind of real-world, immersive experience that will give cadets the practice to assess a situation and react appropriately,” said Claeys. “The additional training will keep our troopers safe while they keep Kansans safe.”
Claeys serves on the House Appropriations committee where he inserted the funding on the final day of the committee debate on the budget. Claeys also serves as chairman of the House Transportation and Public Safety Budget committee, where the Kansas Highway Patrol budget begins its way through the legislative process.
