Police remind drivers about school zones, buses

School zones are now active and the Salina Police Department wants to make sure drivers abide by the rules of the road when in those zones.

Salina Police Sergeant Brent Rupert said Tuesday that the Salina Police Department has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drivers who don’t follow the speed limits in school zones.

Rupert said that fines and court costs for a speeding ticket in a school zone can range from $132 to $192.

Additionally, Rupert said drivers also needed to be aware of stopped school buses. He said that drivers in both directions need to stop when a school bus has its red lights activated and stop sign out, regardless of whether the road is two lanes or four lanes. Fines and court costs for this offense are $315 for a first offense, and jump dramatically for subsequent offenses.
