Chiefs vs. Steelers postgame notes

CHIEFS END STREAK AT HEINZ FIELD: Today’s 42-37 win at Heinz Field marks the first time since 1986 that the Chiefs beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh. In that time since the Chiefs last win, the Chiefs and Steelers have met at Heinz field seven times including today’s game.

REID’S HEAD COACHING SUCCESS: With today’s 42-37 win, Andy Reid now owns 196 regular and postseason victories (185 regular, 11 postseason), second most of any active NFL head coach, behind New England’s Bill Belichick (279). Reid is one of seven active NFL head coaches with more than 100 victories. Reid’s 196 victories currently rank him ninth in NFL history for most all-time wins as a head coach.

THOMAS’ BIG RETURN: After forcing a three-and-out drive on the Steeler’s first possession, WR De’Anthony Thomas returned a Pittsburgh P Jordan Berry punt 53 yards to set up a Kansas City touchdown. This marks the second week in a row that the Chiefs have returned a punt for 50+ yards on the first punt of the game.

CONLEY FINDS THE ENDZONE: On the Chiefs opening drive of the game WR Chris Conley caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from QB Patrick Mahomes to put the Chiefs up 7-0. This marks Conley’s second career touchdown reception.

KELCE HAULS IN TWO TOUCHDOWNS: TE Travis Kelce caught 19- and 25-yard touchdown passes from QB Patrick Mahomes, giving him his first and second touchdowns of the season and 24 career receiving touchdowns. This marks Kelce’s third career game with multiple touchdowns. Kelce has caught a pass in 65 straight games, the third-longest streak in franchise history. He finished the game with seven receptions for 109 yards to go with his two touchdowns. It was his 13th career game with 100 or more receiving yards.

HUNT GRABS TOUCHDOWN: RB Kareem Hunt hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from QB Patrick Mahomes in the first quarter to give the Chiefs a 21-0 lead. It marks Hunt’s first touchdown of the season. Hunt owns 12 total touchdowns (eight rushing, four receiving) for his career. Hunt added 18 rushes for 75 yards to go along with his touchdown.

CHIEFS OFFENSE MAKING HISTORY: The Chiefs offense started the day scoring on their first three drives of the game. Kansas City scored 21 points in the first quarter against the Steelers, tying the most points scored by the Chiefs in the opening quarter of a game in the club’s history and third time under Head Coach Andy Reid.

MAHOMES STARTS HOT EARLY, REMAINS EFFICIENT: QB Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdown passes in the game’s opening quarter, the most by any Chiefs quarterback in franchise history. Mahomes finished the game completing 23 of 28 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns, good for a 154.8 passer rating. Mahomes threw for over 300 yards for the first time in his career and broke multiple Chiefs and NFL records in today’s game.

MAHOMES MAKES CHIEFS HISTORY: With his 25-yard touchdown pass to TE Travis Kelce, QB Patrick Mahomes became the first Chiefs quarterback to throw for eight touchdowns in the first two games of the season, passing QB Len Dawson’s previous record of seven touchdowns in the first two weeks of the 1963 season. Mahomes went on to finish the game with six touchdowns, 10 total through Weeks 1 and 2.

Mahomes’ six touchdown passes in today’s game tie with Chiefs QB Len Dawson for most touchdown passes in one game in team history. Dawson completed this feat in November of 1964 making Mahomes the first quarterback to throw six touchdowns passes in one game for the Chiefs in 54 years. The Chiefs six passing touchdowns tie for the most touchdowns given up by the Steelers since their game at Buffalo on Sept. 8, 1991.

MAHOMES OFF THE CHARTS: QB Patrick Mahomes’ 10 touchdown passes in the first two weeks of the season are the most touchdown passes in Weeks 1-2 of a season in NFL history. He passed QBs Peyton Manning (2013), Drew Brees (2009) and Charley Johnson (1965) who all had nine touchdown passes in the first two weeks.

Mahomes now owns the record for most career touchdown passes (10) by a player in his first three career games, surpassing Marcus Mariota (eight in 2015) and Mark Rypien (eight in 1988).

ROBINSON SNAGS TOUCHDOWN: WR Demarcus Robinson scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from QB Patrick Mahomes. This marks Robinson’s first touchdown of the season and the first regular season touchdown of his career. His touchdown reception was his only target and reception of the game.

SEVEN CHIEFS FIND THE END ZONE THROUH THE AIR: Through two games this season, seven different players (WR Tyreek Hill, WR De’Anthony Thomas, FB Anthony Sherman, WR Chris Conley, TE Travis Kelce, RB Kareem Hunt and WR Demarcus Robinson) have a receiving touchdown for the Chiefs. Seven players with receiving touchdowns ties the Chiefs total from the entire 2017 season.

HILL SCORES AGAIN: WR Tyreek Hill scored on a 29-yard touchdown reception, marking his fourth touchdown (three receiving, one punt return) of the 2018 season. Hill has 24 touchdowns (16 receiving, three rushing, four punt return, one kick return) for his career. Hill finished the game with five receptions for 90 yards to go along with his touchdown reception.

BAILEY BRINGS DOWN ROETHLISBERGER: During the fourth quarter, DL Allen Bailey brought down QB Ben Roethlisberger for a loss of ten yards. This marks Bailey’s first sack of the season giving him 14.5 sacks in his career. Bailey added two solo tackles to go along with his sack.

CHIEFS RECORD TWO 100-YARD RECEIVERS: The Chiefs had two 100-yard receivers in today’s game for the first time since 2006. TE Travis Kelce led all receivers with seven receptions for 109 yards and WR Sammy Watkins had six receptions for 100 yards to end the game. This marks Kelce’s 13th 100-yard game of his career and Watkins’ 12th 100-yard game, his first since joining the Chiefs.

HITCHENS LEADS ALL TACKLERS AGAIN: For the second week in a row, LB Anthony Hitchens led the defense with 12 tackles (seven solo).

COLQUITT’S CAREER MILESTONES: P Dustin Colquitt has played in 208 career games for the Chiefs, becoming just the fourth player in franchise history to play in 200 or more games. He needs five more games to pass K Nick Lowery (212) for second-most games played with the Chiefs. With 208 games played with the Chiefs, Colquitt has logged the most regular season games by a punter with one team in NFL history, passing P Ray Guy who played 207 games with the Raiders.

Colquitt has been one of the best punters in the NFL at putting the ball inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He recorded one punt inside the 20-yard line today, giving him 424 career punts inside the 20. He owns the franchise record with 424 career punts inside the 20, the most by any punter in the NFL since he entered the league 2005. He currently ranks fourth all-time in NFL history for most punts inside the 20.

COLQUITT CONTINUES CLIMB: Colquitt punted two times for 100 yards (50.0 gross, 47.0 net), landing one inside the 20-yard line in today’s game. He has punted for 46,602 yards, the most punting yards in franchise history and 16th best in NFL history. Colquitt has punted 1,038 times in his career, ranking first in franchise history. He needs nine punts to pass Ray Guy (1,046) and to tie with Brian Hansen (1,047) for 20th on the list.

KELCE ECLIPSES 4,000 CAREER YARDS: With 109 receiving yards in today’s game TE Travis Kelce has crossed the 4,000-yard receiving plateau. Kelce now ranks second in Chiefs history for most receiving yards by a tight end.
