During the last few years The Saline County Sheriffs Office has been taking unused or expired medication for safe disposal.
Sheriff Glen Kochanowski says in addition to the normal collection time of Monday through Friday from 8 til 5, The Sheriffs Office will be open on Saturday October 29th from 8 til 5 collecting the unused drugs and medication as part of a nationwide effort by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Kochanowski says on average about 20 to 30 pounds of all types of drugs and medication a week are turned into his office.
Recently nearly 400 pounds was disposed of in the Salina landfill southwest of Salina.
The Sheriff says disposing of the medication is safe at the land fill because of the landfill having a liner, and records are kept as to the exact location the unused or expired medications are buried.
