Kansas Wesleyan Athletics not only had an outstanding fall semester on the field, court and pitch, but also in the classroom.
The department had its highest number of teams achieve team GPAs above 3.0 since the spring of 2013 with 17. The athletic department also had an overall average team GPA of 3.1, the best in the last five semesters. There were 277 student-athletes that earned at least a 3.0 GPA in the semester, over 55 percent of the student-athlete population.
“I’m particularly pleased with the increase in the number of programs with average GPAs above the 3.00 mark,” said vice president and director of athletics Mike Hermann. “It’s an indication of the renewed commitment by our coaches to emphasize academic achievement within their program, and the outstanding work in the classroom by our students. Plus, we are fortunate to have faculty members that provide avenues for students to successful academically and athletically. The competitive success this fall was outstanding, and the increase in academic achievement by the students makes it even sweeter.”
Individual program successes were also noted. Seven programs had their best team GPA since spring of 2013. Volleyball was again at the top of the list, earning a team GPA of 3.659, the highest team semester GPA in the last 12 semesters.
Women’s Golf had the second highest GPA at 3.507, followed by Women’s Cross Country (3.427), Cheerleading (3.413), and Women’s Track (3.366) to round out the top five programs.
Men’s Cross Country (3.356), Women’s Basketball (3.320), Women’s Soccer (3.273), Women’s Tennis (3.259), Softball (3.253), Men’s Golf (3.22), Men’s Basketball (3.171), Women’s Bowling (3.104), Men’s Bowling (3.1), Baseball (3.076), Men’s Track (3.026) and Men’s Tennis (3.020) round out the list of teams achieving at least a 3.0 average team GPA.
There were 40 student-athletes who had 4.0 GPAs in the semester, better than eight percent of the student-athlete population. Twenty percent of student-athletes earned President’s Honor Roll status, achieving at least a 3.75 GPA in the semester and 44.8 percent of the student-athlete population achieved at least a 3.25 GPA.
