Wildcat women take on the Cowgirls on Wednesday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State will play two or its final three games in the month of January in Bramlage Coliseum, as the Wildcats host Oklahoma State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

  • Wednesday’s game will be aired on ESPN3, as Brian Smoller (play-by-play), Kristin Waller (analyst) and Bridget Howard (sideline) will have the call.
  • Wednesday night is K-State’s Strengths game. The campus-wide Strengths program is in its ninth year and was implemented to increase the engagement and overall well-being of students at Kansas State. K-State’s New Student Services office coordinates with various departments on campus that provides programming, workshops, and development opportunities to help students use their Strengths in a healthy and productive way. The first 150 K-State students will receive a K-State Strengths t-shirt.
  • K-State (12-6, 3-3 Big 12) won its second straight game and picked up its first league road win of the season with a 66-62 decision at Texas Tech on January 19. This was the sixth straight win for the Wildcats at Texas Tech.
  • Kansas State was led by junior forward Peyton Williams, senior guard Kayla Goth and and sophomore guard Rachel Ranke.
  • Williams, a 2019 Katrina McClain Award candidate, registered 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists against the Lady Raiders. For the season, Williams leads K-State in scoring (15.3 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg).
  • Goth, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, registered 10 points, nine assists, five rebounds and three steals. A 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award candidate, Goth leads the Big 12 in total assists and assists per game (118; 6.6 apg). She leads the team in steals (31; 1.9 spg) and is second on the team in scoring (12.3 ppg).
  • Ranke added 11 points, three rebounds and a steal. This was her third game in double figures in league play this season. She is averaging 10.1 points and paces the Wildcats with 38 three-point field goals made.

  • #KStateWBB has scored 20 or more points in a quarter this season 18 times, including twice in each of K-State’s wins last week against Texas and Texas Tech.
  • The Wildcats are 10-2 this season when scoring 20 or more points in a quarter.
  • Since the inception of the quarter system in the 2015-16 season, K-State owns an overall record of 57-28 (.671) when scoring 20 or more points in any quarter in a game.

  • Oklahoma State (12-4, 3-2 Big 12) has won three of its last four games including a 72-62 win at Kansas on January 19.

  • On the floor, Oklahoma State features two players averaging double figures: sophomores Vivian Gray and Braxtin Miller.
  • Gray, a forward from Argyle, Texas, is averaging 18.3 points and 6.1 rebounds. Gray is shooting 86.7 percent (65-of-75) from the free throw line for the season. She is second in the league with eight games of 20 or more points. At Kansas, Gray tallied 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
  • Miller is also averaging 18.3 points and has dished out 3.9 assists. Against the Jayhawks, Miller tallied 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

 

Wildcats in nail-biters

  • Kansas State owns an all-time record in overtime games of 25-28 (.472), including a 22-23 record in single overtime games and an 8-14 mark in overtime games against non-conference opponents.
  • K-State’s last overtime game came on Jan. 28, 2018 at Kansas, a 63-59 win. It was K-State’s first overtime road win since Feb. 5, 2011 at Missouri.
  • Over the last 10 seasons, K-State is 36-17 (.679) in games decided by five points or less.

 

Halftime lead = K-State ‘W’ since 2001-02

  • Since the 2001-02 season, K-State is 296-37 (.889) when leading at the break.
  • K-State is 71-4 (.947) when leading at the break under head coach Jeff Mittie.
  • Since the start of the 2007-08 season, K-State is 194-12 (.942) when leading with five minutes to play including a 78-1 (.987) record under Mittie.

  • K-State has opened the 2018-19 season with 241 assists on its 424 made field goals, which is a 56.8 percent assisted shot rate.
  • The Wildcats handed out a season-high 24 assists against Oklahoma on January 5. The Wildcats are 59-2 when handing out 20 or more assists over the last 13 years.
  • Under head Jeff Mittie’s direction, K-State has registered 2,167 assists on 3,495 made field goals which is an assisted shot rate of 62.0 percent.
  • In the 2017-18 season, Kansas State dished out 15.4 assists per game, which ranked fifth in the Big 12, and owned a 1.21 assist to turnover ratio, which ranked third in the Big 12.   • The 525 assists by K-State were the most in the Mittie-era and the sixth-highest total in program history. This marked the eighth time in program history that K-State registered 500 or more assists in a season.
  • K-State registered the third-highest assist-to-turnover ratio in program history (1.21). This was the highest assist-to-turnover ratio since the 2003-04 season (1.33) set the school record.
  • Since assists became an officially tracked stat in 1981-82, Kansas State has registered an assist percentage of 60.0 percent or higher at the end of a season 19 times in its history including a current streak of five straight seasons.
  • K-State dished out 25 assists on 34 made field goals (73.5 percent) against Chicago State on Dec. 18, the most since 26 assists against TCU on Feb. 11, 2015. K-State had 12 games last season with assists on 70 percent or more of the made field goals.

 

Wildcats solid from beyond the arc

  • Kansas State has registered a season-high 11 connections from beyond the arc three times this season: against Vanderbilt on December 2, against Oklahoma on January 5 and against Texas on January 16.
  • For the season, K-State is 101-of-327 (.309) from beyond the arc. K-State has made five or more 3-point field goals in 11 games this season. The Wildcats are recording 25.8 percent of its point total off 3-pointers this season.
  • K-State has benefitted from the shooting of sophomore guard Rachel Ranke and freshman guard Christianna Carr. When either player makes three or more 3-pointers in a game, K-State is 9-0 this season.
  • In the Jeff Mittie era, the Wildcats have made five or more 3-pointers in a game 109 times in 151 total games including 16 games with 10 or more connections from deep (14-2).
  • In the five seasons under Mittie, K-State has buried 915 three-pointers which is 6.1 per game.
  • K-State has made at least one 3-point field goal in 392 consecutive games, dating back to Feb. 7, 2007.

 

Goth surpasses 1,000-point mark for career

  • Senior guard Kayla Goth has built herself into a dynamic scoring threat for K-State over the last two seasons and became the 41st player in program history with 1,000 or more points in their career during K-State’s win over Oklahoma on January 5.
  • Goth ranks 35th in program history for career points with 1,064 points.
  • In the 2018-19 season, the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award candidate is second on the Wildcats with 12.3 points per game on a .444 field goal percentage. She ranks 16th in the Big 12 in scoring.
  • Against Texas on January 16, Goth finished with a stat line of 20 points and 12 assists. She is the first player in program history to record 20 or more points and 12 or more assists in a game and the first to achieve it twice.
  • Goth has 24 career games with at least 15 points and five assists, including 19 last season. She has more games with 15 or more points and five or more assists (24) than every other K-State player since the start of the 2014-15 season (12).
  • Goth has earned a pair of Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season (December 10 & January 21). She is the first player to earn two Big 12 Player of the Week honors in the Jeff Mittie era and the first to earn two in the same season since Brittany Chambers in the 2010-11 season. Goth is the fourth player in program history to earn two or more Big 12 Player of the Week honors in the same season (Nicole Ohlde, Kendra Wecker & Chambers).

 

Jones, Ray forming effective timeshare

  • The interior duo of senior forward Kali Jones and sophomore forward Ashley Ray have split time in the middle for K-State in Big 12 play this season.
  • The tandem has been efficient, as they have combined to shoot 76.7 percent (23-of-30) from the field and average 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds through the first six games. They are a combined +26 for K-State in league play.
  • Jones leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage in league games at 71.4 percent.
