The Kansas Arts Commission cancelled a fundraising project earlier this year during a dispute over arts funding with Gov. Sam Brownback.
Now, commission members appointed by Brownback are trying to revive the project, selling special license plates to support the arts. New commission member David Lindstrom said Friday that the goal is to raise several hundred thousand dollars for arts programs.
The commission had only to approve the final design for the license plate when its top staffer told the state Division of Vehicle’s director in May that the commission was dropping the project. Four days later, Brownback vetoed the commission’s entire budget, making Kansas the only state to eliminate its arts funding.
The reason cited for dropping the project was uncertainty about the commission’s future.
