A 26-year-old man is dead following a motorcycle accident in central Salina Sunday afternoon.

Salina Police Sergeant Brent Rupert said Monday that Blaine K. Smith, of Salina, died at the scene of the accident at the intersection of Franklin and Custer.

Rupert said Smith was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle westbound on Franklin at a high rate of speed. When he neared the intersection of Franklin and Custer and was unable to stop, Smith laid the motorcycle on its side, Rupert said. The motorcycle flipped up over the curb and came to rest in the yard at 828 Custer, he said.

Smith, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene, Rupert said.

Although the accident is still under investigation, police believe both speed and alcohol played a factor in the accident, Rupert said.
