Salina woman arrested in EBT benefits card case

An alert off-duty officer is credited with helping catch a Salina woman wanted in a case dating back to November of 2018.

Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said Monday that Renee Rae Bingham was arrested on suspicion of criminal use of a financial card and theft by deception after an off-duty officer who had been working the case spotted her in Walmart. Police also are conferring with the state attorney general’s office about a possible welfare fraud charge, he said.

Bingham is accused of acquiring an EBT benefits card belonging to a Salina man after the man left it in his former residence when he was evicted, Villanueva said.

According to Villanueva, $286 worth of unauthorized charges were made on the card.
