Salina police are investigating the theft of more than 60 used car batteries from two south Salina businesses.
Surveillance video shows a small blue pickup, similar to a Chevrolet S10, pull off of Schilling Road into the parking lot of Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth, at 2 a.m. Tuesday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Wednesday. The driver can be seen getting out of the pickup and cutting the lock off of a wire cage, where the used batteries are kept, Forrester said. A passenger then is seen getting out and loading the batteries into the back of the pickup, he added.
Thirty-three batteries, worth an estimated $400, were taken during the three-minute incident, he said.
A Walmart loss prevention employee noticed the incident while reviewing surveillance video and called police at approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, Forrester said.
Video surveillance at nearby Sam’s Club showed a small blue pickup pull up to the used battery cage there at about 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, Forrester said. In that incident, 30 batteries worth nearly $400 were stolen, he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
