The Saline County Sheriff’s Office does not take prepaid gift cards as bond payment. It’s a scam!
That’s the word from Salina County Sheriff Roger Soldan after two known instances of the scam occurred over the weekend, one of which lost a man thousands of dollars.
Soldan said Monday that someone posing as a real sheriff’s office lieutenant called family members of people who actually are in jail and told them they could get their family members out of jail by purchasing gift cards and providing the numbers on the card to the alleged lieutenant.
According to Soldan, no one from the sheriff’s office will
- Call a family member and ask for prepaid gift card numbers in order to free someone from jail
- Accept prepaid gift cards as bond payments
Soldan said one man who was called over the weekend is out approximately $3,000.
The sheriff’s office found out about the scam when a second person who was called was having trouble with the numbers on the cards and called the real sheriff’s office lieutenant to explain the situation, Soldan said.
