Fishing with a Cop set for June 1 at Lakewood

It’s almost time for Fishing with a Cop!

Registration is now open for the fifth annual event for children ages 14 and under, said Salina Police Sergeant Brent Rupert, one of the organizers.

This year’s Fishing with a Cop is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon on June 1 at Lakewood Park. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m., Rupert said.

There is no cost for children to participate, however they do need to be registered for the event, he noted. Registration can be completed at the Salina Parks and Recreation website: salinaparks.com, Rupert said.

The event includes three age categories:

  • Ages 8 and younger
  • Ages 9 to 11
  • Ages 12-14

Rupert has teamed up with the Lakewood Discovery Center to give local children the opportunity to fish with local Salina Police officers, Saline County Sheriff’s deputies, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, and Kansas Wildlife and Parks officers.

According to information provided by Rupert, the mission of the non-profit, annual event “is to establish relationships with local law enforcement officers, reconnect kids to nature, reconnect kids to family, strengthen family relationships, and to increase participation in recreational angling.”

The first full Fishing with a Cop event was in June 2015. Every child who attended that event left with a new fishing pole, a new tackle box, lures, law enforcement friends, and memories that will last a lifetime, according to the information from Rupert.
