August in Salina: More wet, slightly cooler

 

August in Salina was more wet and slightly cooler than normal.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rainfall for Salina was nearly five inches more that the normal amount for August, coming in at 8.87 inches. The greatest 24-hour total was 3.31 inches on Aug.8.

The maximum precipitation record for Salina was 13.75 inches in 1977, while the minimum was 0.04 of an inch in 2007. In 2018, Salina saw 4.60 inches of rain, according to NWS.

NWS noted that the average maximum temperature for August in Salina was 86.6 degrees, slightly cooler than the normal high of 91.1 degrees. The average minimum was 68.3 degrees, just slightly higher than the normal of 68.1 degrees. In 2018, the average high was 88 degrees and the average low was 66.7 degrees, according to NWS.

The record high temperature was 118 on Aug. 13, 1936, while the record low was 42 degrees on August 28, 1916, NWS noted.

The average wind speed during August was 8 mph. The highest wind speed — 46 mph — and the highest gust — 60 mph — were both recorded during the thunderstorms that rolled through on Thursday, according to NWS.
