Road dust apparently was a factor in an injury accident on West Water Well Road Wednesday.

Saline County Sheriff’s Captain Jim Hughes said Thursday that first responders were dispatched at 12:04 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of West Water Well Road and South Burma Road for the report of a two-vehicle accident. When they arrived, they found the accident just a bit west of South Burma Road on West Water Well Road.

Hughes said a blue Dodge pickup with an unknown driver had been kicking up a lot of dust while traveling east on West Water Well Road. Behind the Dodge was a 1998 Chevrolet pickup driven by Chris Giroux, 22, of Marquette, Hughes said. Traveling west on West Water Well Road was a 2002 Chevrolet utility pickup driven by Randy Choitz, 40, of Salina, Hughes said.

Both Giroux and Choitz noted the dust cloud kicked up by the Dodge pickup, Hughes said.

According to Hughes, the pickups driven by Giroux and Choitz crashed nearly head-on in the middle of the road in the disorienting dust cloud.

Hughes said it appeared that Giroux was ejected through the driver’s side window, while Choitz was trapped and had to be extricated from his vehicle. Both men were transported to Salina Regional with serious injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, Hughs said. Neither man was properly restrained, Hughes said.
