KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid addressed the media, discussing, among other things, the team’s loss to the Colts on Sunday. Following are his remarks.

OPENING STATEMENT: “I don’t have any injuries to update you on right now. The guys are coming in. Obviously, there are some great things that we can take from this game and learn from, which we’ll do here starting tomorrow when the guys get in here. We all had a piece of it, coaches and players. We all have to do better. That’s part of the things that go on in a loss, or a win. You go back through and you evaluate it and make sure that you do the right things. I thought, at times, we were trying too hard catching the ball or running the ball and not working our way upfield, that would be an example of something like that. At times, you can do too much. The penalties, obviously, we’re more disciplined than that. We have to do a better job with the penalties. Way too many. The turnover, I thought, came at an inopportune time – not that they ever come at the right times, but when you’re working your way down in to a potential scoring position, you can’t do that. I thought we could tackle better. We had a couple of opportunities for tackles in crucial situations and you have to take advantage of them. These are things that we can learn from and get better at. I was asked last night about the fourth-and-one call. That was a play that we all felt good about. We were one block away from taking care of business there on that. You learn from that, too. That’s the important thing. Right now, at this time of the year, very few teams go undefeated. I think we know that. It’s a time where you can buckle down and learn some things from it and make yourself a better team for the duration of the season. All is not lost. Even though things get magnified in the National Football League, especially when you have a national game like that. The positives were that we were able to get some guys in that had not had the extended playing time; Morris Claiborne, then Khalen Saunders got an opportunity to jump in there and play some on the defensive line and Ben Niemann got extended time there at linebacker. We had a few guys nicked up and those guys had – whether they’re old but new to the team, or a young guy – an opportunity to get some experience and to play. Again, throughout the duration of the season, you’re going to need everybody. We did have a few injuries and guys worked in there to step up. With that, time’s yours.”

Q: You said a couple of weeks ago that you felt like the defense was getting close. It seems like it has gone the other way over the past couple of weeks, particularly last night. What has led to that?

REID: “I think you break it down to three plays in there. Some of it came down to the tackling. You saw the Honey Badger (Tyrann Mathieu) get a nice interception there, which I thought was a beautiful thing. But it comes down to certain plays. So, you go back and you evaluate those and you make sure that guys are in the right position and that you’re making the right call and so on. We have to tackle better. That’s really what it comes down to. Too many missed tackles there.”

Q: How difficult is it to work on tackling in practice with the limitation placed on live tackling in practice?

REID: “That’s not an excuse. We work on it. There are no excuses for it. We have to do better with it. Again, those are things that we can learn from. There’s a time and a place where you come up and get after a guy. There’s a time and a place where you just need to get him on the ground in situations. That’s something that we can learn from. The one’s that I’m talking about were pretty big situations where you have an opportunity to potentially get off the field, or at least put them in a third-and-long situation. But we’ll improve on those things as we go here.”

Q: Is having a sense of pride and an attitude when you play, something that this defense still needs to build?

REID: “I think it’s just more playing together and working it to where you’re confident in the guy next to you. It’s all gap responsibility. The responsibility is there when you’re talking about the run game. It’s important that everybody trusts everybody and that you get in there when it’s live and going. Stay aggressive with it. That comes with playing. Listen, it’s everybody. We are all a part of it. It’s not players or anything, we all have to do our job better. I’m right in that mix. I think from a defensive standpoint, time helps out with some of that. As long as you keep the right attitude and you’re playing downhill football and you keep the aggressiveness going.”

Q: Was it pure instincts on Tyrann Mathieu’s part to make that interception, or was his takeaway set up by design?

REID: “It was a little bit of both, but it was one heck of a play. You got a chance to see his athletic ability after the catch. Those were ones that we were close on over the last couple of weeks. He had a couple of opportunities in the one game there with the Ravens. When you look at it, and when you get into the NFL, there is a small margin between winning and losing – there’s also a small margin between making the play and not making the play. We have to narrow that down. But, that’s one of the positives that you take out of the game.”

Q: If the injuries are significant to the offensive line, is there a possibility you could bring Jeff Allen back?

REID: “There’s a chance, yeah. We love Jeff Allen here, but you get into a number crunch. Absolutely. That’s the way it works. Brett (Veach) is looking at all that stuff but we think the world of Jeff Allen. Good player and good person.”

Q: Patrick Mahomes’ completion has been down, is that due to so many different players being in for the wide receivers and tight ends?

REID: “That and he’s moving around a little bit. We need to tighten that up. We have to do a better job upfront. Again, I mentioned that last night, I can help with some of the calls on that but we’ve got to do a better job securing things. He shouldn’t have to move as much as he’s moving unless we call for the move. We have to tighten that up.”

Q: Patrick Mahomes mentioned the man to man coverage, some may say there’s a blueprint to covering you guys, does the fact it’s happening in Week 5 help you going forward knowing you can make the adjustment now?

REID: “Yeah, there’s a certain attitude that comes with man to man. You have to think and present to the defense. I don’t think we did a great job of that, I think we can do better there. I can do better on giving the guys plays with better guesses. That’s where we all become a part of this thing. It’s not one answer.”

Q: LeSean McCoy didn’t play much last night, is something going on or did that have to do with the fumble?

REID: “Well he came back in right after the fumble, you saw that, so that wasn’t it. There were a couple little things in there, but we’ll get that straight as far as protection. We’ll work on that and get that taken care of.”

Q: Last night you talked about the slow starts, how much of that is because Tyreek Hill isn’t here and you’re having to adjust play?

REID: “Not at all. It’s not that you don’t want Tyreek to play, that can be taken a couple different ways, but when you drive right down the field and then have penalty, penalty and pressure, those aren’t things that are Tyreek Hill related. He’s not causing penalties on the sideline there. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot. Like I told the guys, you figure it out and how we get this thing straightened out in the powerful, explosive offense whoever is in there. You can’t go backwards. You can’t have the turnover. You can’t have the penalties like we’re having. It’s ridiculous, we’re way better than that, and we have to take care of it and fix that.”

Q: It seemed like there was a situation between Eric Bieniemy and Travis Kelce on the sideline, what was that and have you talked to them?

REID: “Listen, you see that every week, everywhere. That’s football. It’s an emotional environment. Travis had a potential couple of fumbles going on where they had the ball. He was mad at himself and EB (Eric Bieniemy) got after him a little bit. Those things happen but it all worked out alright afterwards. That happens you just don’t have that many cameras normally than you do on a Sunday night game. If you look around the league, it’s an emotional game. You see grown men up here who have tears in their eyes after a game, you know that also carries on the field. They all want to do good. Coaches want them to do good and the players want to do good. Emotions get involved sometimes.”

Q: Bashaud Breeland had a couple penalties, is that him needing to be disciplined or unluckiness, what did you see from film?

REID: “You know you got eyes on him. Once you get the first one you know they have eyes on you. You’ve got to stay disciplined with your techniques and fundamentals. He’s been putting together a pretty good year, but it got away from him with those penalties last night. He’ll get back on board.”

Q: With the type of defenses you’re seeing, how much of that comes down to beating the guy across from you or is that too simplistic?

REID: “When it’s man to man coverage, it comes down to that. You have to put them in the right position as a coach and when they’re in the right position they have to do that. It is man to man. And then you have to take care of business up front. While those guys are out there working for you trying to get open, you have to make sure you’re sound upfront. It’s a combination of everything, the play call and then the execution by the front and by the receivers.”

Q: What are the chances Tyreek plays this week against Houston?

REID: “I’ll know more as we get through this week. He practiced a little bit last week and moved around pretty good. Again, they have to make sure everything is stable and he wasn’t being hit last week, so we have to make sure everything is stable in there. They will work on that this week and see where we are at.”
