In 1919, three tornadoes struck Barton County. The strongest twister, a violent F4 with a track nine miles long and around 150 yards wide, tore through downtown Hoisington. Approximately 60 homes were heavily damaged or completely destroyed, four people were killed, and 25 were injured. The damage was approximately $200,000. Business papers and a canceled check were found in Lincoln, 55 miles to the northeast.
In 2000, Wichita chilled out with a low of 26 degrees. This was the earliest in the fall that temperatures in the 20s had ever been observed in Wichita. In addition, the mercury fell to 26 degrees on the 9th and to 29 degrees on the 10th, both of which were also records for these respective dates.
