KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid met with the media Friday. Following are his comments.
OPENING STATEMENT: “I really don’t have any injury updates. I can tell you though that Patrick (Mahomes) has been in the MRI, but we don’t have the results of the MRI. We’ll have to get you that. When I have all of the information together, we’ll get it to you. That might not be for a little bit, but we’ll make sure that we get it to you. Other than that, I thought our guys played a good, solid, all-around game. There are things we can improve on, but I was proud of the effort and the way they handled the game plan on a short week. I look back and you kind of forget that the defense had 90 plays four days ago, and then they came back with another 60 or whatever plays. I mean, they had 150-plus plays in just a short period of time and they powered through that. There’s a mental toughness and an attitude that goes with that. To step up like they did, I was proud of them. There were a lot of individual performances that I thought were well, but I just think that collectively, as a group, I was proud of the coordinators. (Offensive Coordinator) Eric Bieniemy, I thought he put together a great game plan. I’ll tell you what he did, he put one together that could transfer from Patrick down to Matt (Moore) with ease. That’s a tough thing to do when you have a quarterback that’s kind of new to the system and so on. That was unique. I thought Spags (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) had a very good game plan. The way he used Reggie (Ragland) and (Rashad) Fenton, and some of these young guys, but the way he used Reggie, moving him to the SAM linebacker position, I thought Reggie really responded well. He really was a bigger factor, more than people know. You saw (Anthony) Hitchens make a lot of tackles, but Reggie was part of that by working the different gaps and getting in there. It allowed Hitch to play off of him a little bit. I thought (Dustin) Colquitt stepped up and did a good job on special teams. He punted the ball well and kind of kept the field position right. That ended up being a pretty big thing in that second half. It was good to get (Harrison) Butker in there. He had the miss a week ago, then he came back and I thought he kicked well. All in all, just a good team win.”
Q: Just as you were speaking, a report came out from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that said that Mahomes had suffered a dislocated kneecap, but no additional significant damage. What is your reaction to that?
REID: “Yeah, I didn’t see Ian in the building today, so I don’t know. I haven’t talked to him. I just know what I know, and that’s that the kid had the MRI and that we don’t have all of the information. That’s what I can give you. I’m trying to tell you what’s real. Once we have all of the information, we’ll give you everything that kind of happened and what’s going on here. The whole deal. We don’t hide that, so I don’t really care what somebody else said. I am just going to give you what I’ve got here.”
Q: If there is a prolonged absence with Mahomes, do you have a plan for what you’ll do regarding a backup QB behind Matt Moore?
REID: “I haven’t had a chance to visit with (General Manager Brett) Veach. We brought everybody in late today. We’re just kind of getting started here. I would imagine that we would probably bring a practice squad player up – Kyle Shurmur up – and go from there. I can’t guarantee that for you as we go, but it would be one thought, for sure. And then, let Matt get the reps and go, if that’s where we’re at here. But again, I don’t have all of the information for you on that.”
Q: Is there any update on Chad Henne’s status right now?
REID: “Again, I’m throwing this out there. As I understand, Chad isn’t eligible to come back until after Week 8. We would have another week here before he could actually get back.”
Q: Would you say that Henne is ready to go?
REID: “He’s getting close. He’s getting there. He’s been working his tail off. I haven’t taken him out and thrown with him and all of that, so I can’t tell you how all of that is going.”
Q: What led to the rest of the team not getting down when the injury of Mahomes occurred, being able to get ready to play right away?
REID: “I heard certain people say certain things. The guys, from Sherm (Anthony Sherman) to the defensive guys. When Pat walked off, he wouldn’t take the cart and all of that stuff. I think that probably set a tempo. Let’s go. It’s time to go. Everybody toughen up and let’s roll. I think that was part of it. I saw Tyreek (Hill) grab the offensive guys and the skill guys and tell them that we’re rolling here, we’re not letting up an inch. I saw that. I saw Sherm going around saying things. On defense, I know Frank Clark got fired up when Pat walked by. And this is like the toughest guy out here, man. We are going to step up our game here. Those were the people that I saw. Now, I was trying to get things organized there, so I didn’t see anything else other than that.”
Q: How do you avoid that, assuming Patrick will be out for a little while?
REID: “You have to play. You have to practice. You have to go through the process. Hopefully we get a couple guys back here, they’ve been banged up, so add that to the mix . We’ve had some young guys get some great reps and valuable reps and play with great energy. I think all of those are positives. We’re not near where we need to be, we’ve got a ton of room to improve and once we get back here, the guys are getting a few days off here. Once they get back, they were told before they left we have a lot of work to do to get better. That’s where we’re at.”
Q: You guys talked about signing Matt Moore last year but didn’t until this year, what did you like about him then?
REID: “You saw production from him for a number of years. There was always that question, he was in those situations where people debate if he should be the starter or if the other guy should be the starter. You saw that ability to start football games and win. I told you before, he and Chad (Henne), that was the year it was between them two. It was really a coin flip, I didn’t think we would lose either way. It was great we had an opportunity to get him back here.”
Q: What did you see from Anthony Hitchens, Khalen Saunders and Derrick Nnadi?
REID: “I thought (Anthony) Hitch had a real great game and he brought great energy. I thought he played well all the way around and I think everyone around him felt that energy. Listen, (Derrick) Nnadi I thought played one of his better games, maybe his best game since he has been here. And Khalen (Saunders) will keep getting better every week. I mean, he’s learning. He’s very athletica and he’s a smart kid so he is making progress there.”
Q: Can you speak to how difficult it is for Matt Moore to come in the middle of the game and not have a week’s preparation to get those reps?
REID: “It’s hard to do. Really, the whole thing he’s done here; coming in late to us when Chad got hurt and then asking him to pick up this offense which is pretty complicated. He’s a pro and he’s done a very nice job with it. It’s hard to be a relief pitcher, but he’s done it before and there’s a certain way to prep for that. He understands that and it payed off for him. The best part is we didn’t have to change up a lot of things. The hard thing to do is if one guy comes in, the backup comes in, and you have to change the whole offense right away. That’s a tough deal. We didn’t have to do that with him.”
Q: You’ve been through this in 2012 when Donovan (McNabb) was out a few games but still made the NFC Championship, how do your past experiences without a big quarterback help this time around?
REID: “This son of a gun doesn’t slow down for anyone or anything. The NFL keeps rolling, we’re still going to have games and if you’re in the league and you’re a player, you’re expected to step up and play. You’re obviously one of the best in the world at what you do if you’re in the league. I’ve always kind of taken that approach and you let it go from there. There’s no looking back in this thing, everything is moving forward in this league. I’ve told you before, very seldom you have an opportunity to look back and those that do are normally out of the league. When you’re in it, you’re in it and you’re only as good as your next game. That’s the approach I’ve always taken and I came up through Bill Walsh and Mike Holmgren’s system and that’s how it was, you kept going.”
Q: You’ve been able to do it so well, play to Alex’s (Smith) strengths and then change it to play to Patrick’s strengths and now you have 10 days before the Packers, are there things you change to alter to Matt’s strengths?
REID: “I don’t think we’ll have to change the whole offense, but definitely, sure. That’s part of being a coach and knowing your players. You want to put them in the best position for what they do the best and work on those things to make them better that they don’t do the best so you can utilize those tools there. I mean we will look at what he does best and talk with him too and we’ll put together a good game plan. That’s the direction we’re going in is to put together a good game plan.”
