Two people from out of state were arrested Friday after an alleged shoplifting incident at a local retail store.
Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said Monday that officers were called to Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street, late Friday morning for the report of an alleged shoplifting incident. The store’s loss prevention personnel reported that a man and a woman were involved in the incident and after the employees confronted the female, they were able to recover a number of items before the woman fled, Hanus said. As the two left the Walmart parking lot, Walmart employees were able to get a tag number, he added.
The vehicle was located a short time later at Candlewood Suites, 2650 Planet Avenue, Hanus said. After a search of the area, officers located the duo walking near The Mattress Hub, 2346 Planet Avenue, he said.
According to Hanus, officers recovered from the vehicle a $16 sweater alleged to have been stolen from Walmart. Drugs and drug paraphernalia also were found in the vehicle, he said. Items retrieved from the woman before she fled include the razors, a flytrap, a Febreeze two-pack, a water filter, and undergarments, Hanus said.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined that the vehicle had been stolen from Washington state and that one of the two license plates on the vehicle also had been stolen from somewhere else and did not match the other, he said.
Police arrested Shirley Quenzer, 44, and Tyler Chihlas, 30, Hanus said. Quenzer told police the two were on their way from Oregon to Arkansas, he said.
Quenzer was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hanus said.
- Possession of methamphetamine
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession of stolen property
- Theft
- Criminal trespass
Hanus explained that criminal trespass was added to the list of requested charges for Quenzer because she had been arrested in April for shoplifting from another Walmart and was banned from all Walmart property.
Chihlas was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hanus said.
- Possession of methamphetamine
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession of stolen property
- Theft
