Letter to The Post: Running The School Zone Gauntlet

Submitted by KS Dad

Every morning many of us parents drop our kids off at school and engage is a automotive dance of swerving, stopping, turning and dodging other cars and kids.

Here’s my rub. The sun is just starting to come up, visibility reduced, cars have their headlights on, some in high beam mode, they drop off kids from both direction and pull away from the curb and are trying to squeeze 4 wide on a 2 lane road. Its a lot like trying to get 5 quarts of poop in 4 quart jar and not get your fingers sticky. This isnt even the bad part.

The children they drop off dart out from in between cars and without a clue, walk in front of thousands of lbs of steel without a shred of regard for Newtons law. Just how tough is it to walk 30 feet to a crosswalk? Where are the parents to remind them as they get out to use the crosswalk? Wheres the school resource cop to actually do some good here. I get it, its cold outside, but that’s where the problems are.

I don’t want to see ANYONE get hurt, so parents do your job EVERYDAY as you drop your kids off and remind them to look both ways and use the crosswalk. Schools, crack out the detention slips for those who refuse to exercise common sense. For those who still want to play the odds and risk your flesh against steel remember this formula: force equals mass times acceleration.
