Mormon Temple Opening Near Kansas City This Spring

A new Mormon temple is scheduled to begin serving regional church members in May.

The 32,000-square foot temple north of Kansas City in Clay County will be dedicated May 6. Before that, the church plans to offer non-members a rare chance to tour the structure in April. After the dedication, only members in good standing will be allowed inside the temple.

The temple will serve about 30,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is based in Salt Lake City. It is expected to draw members from as far as central Kansas and southwest Missouri.

The Kansas City Star reports the temple is not where members hold Sunday worship services. Instead, it is where specific ordinances, or sacraments, such as marriage and baptism, are held.
