Congressman Huelskamp Announces Essay And Arts Competitions

DODGE CITY, KAN.) – The U.S. Capitol Historical Society is hosting its first annual Student Essay Contest on the topic of “Making Democracy Work.” Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit essays about the role of informed citizens in making the American system of representative self-government work. The deadline is June 15, 2012. More information can be found at www.uschs.org.

“Every generation has the responsibility to be informed about the foundations of our country and this competition is an opportunity for our future leaders to articulate that knowledge,” Congressman Huelskamp said. “I encourage middle school and high school students with an interest in the political process to offer submissions.”

Congressman Tim Huelskamp announced Monday that entries are now being accepted for the 2012 Congressional Arts Competition. All high school students in the First Congressional District are encouraged to participate in this competition. The winning artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“Last year, I received several outstanding submissions from the many talented young artists in our district,” Congressman Huelskamp said. “The judges stated that although choosing a winner was difficult, they were greatly inspired by the level of talent in our state. I am excited for this year’s competition, and look forward to receiving more submissions from talented Kansas students.”

The 2012 competition will be hosted by Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas.

Awards will be given in each category and will be announced by Congressman Huelskamp at a reception on Saturday, April 28 at 4 p.m. in Cooper Hall, at Heritage Hall on the Sterling College Campus, located at 125 W. Cooper, Sterling, Kan.
