Train Derails In Junction City

By Brett Regan Junction City Post

A 100-plus coal car Union Pacific train has derailed in Junction City.

Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Wednesday on South Washington Street next to Interstate 70.

There are no reported injuries.

Berges said several train cars are mangled off the tracks and advises motorists to stay away from the area. East Ash Street in Junction City is currently closed. There was no indication as to what caused the train to run off the tracks.

Union Pacific officials from Salina will soon determine if they can move the train and open Ash Street. Berges said some of the tracks are tore up due to the incident.
