Hawks Fly High Again

The Salina Hawks have played the role of Goliath in their first two games of the Kansas Grand Slam Tournament outscoring their  opponents 20-2, beating Rock Creek yesterday 11-0 and beating Hays in their first of two games today 9-2.

Salina got started early capitalizing on three Hays errors in the first inning which accounted for three of the six first inning runs the Hawks scored pushing their lead to 6-1 heading into the second inning.  The damage was done at that point  and Hawks would only scratch out three more runs the rest of the game, but it was enough to give them the 9-2 victory.

Hays out hit the Hawks collecting 10 hits compared to the seven by Salina, but not being able to move them around and committing four errors sunk the Hays Eagles.

Matt Rowe got  the win going five innings striking out three, walking two, and giving up nine hits.  Dillion Hopkins came in for relief  and only surrendered one hit in his two innings of pitching.

The Hawks will finish up pool play tonight at 6 p.m. at Dean Evans against the Topeka Scrappers.  Topeka lost their opening game of the tournament against  Hays 10-2, that being the only game they have played so far.
